Baobab Hotel - Exteriors

Baobab Airport Hotel in daylight, seen from the road with traffic and tree line

Exterior visualizations for the Baobab Airport Hotel in Accra, made for architect Theodore Kanyi.

The commission came directly from the architect’s own desk — Kanyi was client and designer both on this mid-rise hotel, and needed the building’s exterior shown rather than described. What we returned was a short set of views: the tower read from across the road at night, the same elevation in daylight, and the rooftop terrace at dusk.

These are composites rather than pure renders. The building is modelled and detailed in 3D, but the world around it is photographed, which is why the credit sheet splits modelling from photography and lists day shots and night shots separately. Traffic, tree line, neighbouring blocks and sky are all taken on site in Accra, so the massing sits in a real street instead of a generated environment dropped in behind it.

The night pair carries the set. The hotel’s name runs vertically down the blind wall of the stair core in tall, narrow capitals, lit so that it reads from the road, while the bays behind hold the warm interior light and a palm in the foreground goes black against a heavy sky.

In daylight the same elevation resolves into a grid: pale framing, alternating blue spandrel glass and timber-toned panels, balconies stacked down the right flank, and a low-walled service podium at street level.

The last two plates are the terrace. A long lap pool sits under a timber pergola with wall-washers on the columns and clipped conifers in planters along the parapet, and a marble bar runs the length of the far side with the sun going out over the ridge behind it.

Two names, two phases. The same hotel appears on this site a second time as Protea Hotel - Airport (2020) — the interior scheme and the views made of it, published under the name the building later took and credited to K-Line Architects, who designed it. The exterior set above is unchanged and stands on its own.

3D modelling and detailing was led by Jude Abbey with Jude Nyoagbe supporting; Nyoagbe handled texturing, rendering and postwork and shot the night plates, Abbey the day plates. Published to our Behance archive in September 2016. View the original project on Behance.
