TEDxHarambee

An eight-frame motion design intro made for TEDxHarambee, the event dated 4th November 2010 on screen: black titles, red and white event typography, speaker cards and sponsor billboards, all cut by a turning metal gear.

TEDxHarambee needed a short opening film that could carry the event’s identity on a screen before the first talk. The problem was scale: an intro has to set the tone, hand over to speakers and acknowledge sponsors, all in seconds, without a single frame of architecture or footage. The answer was a purely typographic sequence built on the red, white and black TEDx palette.

The sequence is organized as a run of information cards. Practical details come first, with the time and the date set against dimly lit clock and calendar imagery, then the speakers arrive one by one with name and role. Sponsor frames close the film, each labelled by tier so the hierarchy reads instantly from the front row.

Colour is the whole system: near-black frames for the titles, a hard red for the first half of every name and white for the rest, then pale grey frames for the sponsors. A machined silver gear with red concentric rings sits in the corner of each shot, the one graphic element that ties the cards together and suggests motion even in a still.

Eight stills were lifted from the finished video to publish the project: the time card, the date card, three speaker introductions and the sponsor frames naming the beverage and gold partners. Delivered as motion design, the sequence ran on the event’s own screen and stands as the studio’s clearest graphic work outside interiors.

The project was published as TEDxHARAMBEE INTRO VIDEO — MOTION DESIGN — RDVS. DESIGN; the full set is on Behance. The film above is the motion piece from that gallery.
