Lines

A sunset seen over a low, unfinished structure, the sun a small white disc sitting just above the black roofline left of centre. The sky runs from saturated orange at the horizon to a dusty violet at the top. Rising through it are three clusters of bare vertical steel — concrete columns stopped short of their floor, their crowns of protruding rebar tied with a single hoop — and a leafy sapling at the lower left with two tall conical trees at the right. Two power cables cross the upper third diagonally, and a single bird sits on the further one. The corner of a dark slab intrudes at the top-left edge. Red RDVSIMAGING badge, bottom right.

Lines is a 2015 in-house series of seven dusk frames: rebar-crowned concrete stubs, power cables and birds read as pure line against a sky running from orange to near-black, with a window screen dropped in at the middle.

The gallery is titled LINES - EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY and was published on 26 July 2015 from the studio’s RDVS. DESIGN Behance account. Unlike Airport City three weeks earlier, it carries no statement of intent and no credits line, and no licence is recorded against it, so this page has neither a Team row nor a quoted manifesto — the title is all the studio wrote about what it was doing. Seven modules were published and all seven are plated here. Every one of them came back from the CDN’s top rung at exactly 1000 by 667 pixels, so the set was finished to a single frame size rather than collected at whatever the files happened to be, and every one carries the same red RDVSIMAGING badge in its lower-right corner. The badge is not a camera watermark: a Photoshop text layer named and typed RDVSIMAGING survives in the XMP of all seven files, so it was laid on in post, which is why it sits identically placed and identically bright across frames whose shutter settings span thirteen stops.

What the series looks at is one view, held for an hour and a quarter on a July evening and then returned to eighteen days later. Plates four and five are the same stretch of skyline in the last minutes before the sun goes down: a tall wooden distribution pole at the left fanning out service drops, several of those rebar-crowned concrete prods standing at different heights, a stand of narrow trees, and a low lens of cloud lit from underneath. Plate one is the same subject with the sun still a disc above the roofline, and plate two takes everything away but the sky — four parallel cables run down across a flat blue field with a single bird perched on one of them, the most reduced picture in the set. Plate three is the outlier and the hinge: a window screen held close enough that the woven grid is sharp only in a band across the middle, with a blue dusk and a cluster of out-of-focus lights burning red-orange through the mesh below it. Plates six and seven are what is left when the light has gone — near-total silhouettes of pitched roofs, with the afterglow surviving only as a thin orange slot at the horizon.

The treatment is a single exposure ramp that ends in long exposures, and the files document it. All seven were shot on a Canon EOS 60D with the kit EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, on evaluative metering with the exposure compensation left at zero, and every one went the same route out: raw CR2 converted to TIFF, composited in Adobe Photoshop CC 2015 for Windows, flattened to JPEG. The shutter walks through that hour and a quarter from 1/5000 second at ISO 100 while the sun is still up, to one second for the screen, to 1.6 seconds at ISO 200 for the two night roofs. The zoom walks the other way: 33 millimetres for the first frame of the evening, then 42, then 41, then 18 for the two darkest, so the series ends holding the whole width of two houses. The later evening was shot tighter, at 55 millimetres for both of its frames. Between plates four and five the sun drops behind the roofline, and after plate five the only light left in any of the frames is a thin orange slot low on the horizon.

The order the gallery chose is not the order the photographs were made, and the two disagree in a way worth setting out. Five frames were exposed on the evening of 11 July 2015, between 17:53 and 19:09, and two on the evening of 29 July, between 18:07 and 18:28 — two sittings eighteen days apart, the first spanning one hour and sixteen minutes and the second twenty minutes. The gallery opens with the two later frames and puts the five earlier ones behind them, and inside that earlier group the display order is 19:00, 17:55, 17:53, 19:09, 19:09, so the two first exposures of the night sit in the middle of the run. The retouching dates pull the same way as the display order rather than the capture order: five files carry Photoshop modification stamps of 25 and 26 July, on or before the stated publication date, while plates one and two were finished at 16:37 and 16:52 on 30 July — four days after the gallery says it went up. The CDN adds a third date again, with all seven files uploaded on the morning of 2 November 2015 within two and a half hours of each other, the same November sitting already recorded for Airport City and West Hills Mall. The listing reads 2015, which every one of these dates supports.

Location is the one thing this page cannot state, and the spec row says so rather than guessing. The gallery names no place, the enumeration records no description, and no GPS block survives the Photoshop export on any of the seven. What can be said is circumstantial: every file records its own timestamps at a +00:00 offset, which is Ghana mean time and the studio’s own, the frames show a low-rise development under construction with bare column starters and an overhead distribution network, and the two galleries from the same run already in this archive, Airport City and West Hills Mall, are both Accra subjects. That is an argument for the same place, not a source statement, so it stays in the prose. LINES - EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY is the last of the studio’s 2015 photography run, which was dense: LA MAISON - PHOTOGRAPHY on 11 June, WEST HILLS MALL - PHOTOGRAPHY on 14 June, AIRPORT CITY,ACCRA - PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIMENT on 5 July, VILLAGIO VISTA - PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIMENT on 9 July and this gallery on 26 July — five galleries in six weeks.
