CAPSS Dinner

The rendered event poster for the CAPSS annual college dinner, built on an olive damask wallpaper pattern cut across by three tilted white bands: the society’s name is drawn in a tall outlined display face at the top, under it “ANNUAL COLLEGE DINNER & LAUNCHING OF THE SIMPOA FUND”, then DATE: 28.03.09, TIME: 7:00 PM and VENUE: NODA HOTEL (FUMESUA), a list of invited guests running from Vice Chancellor to Head of Departments, the price GHC 10 and two contact names, all set beside a man in a black suit at the left, a woman in a white back-laced dress at the right, and a place setting with a fork and folded green napkins along the foot, over a band carrying the studio’s blog address and telephone number.

An event poster and a matching ticket for the CAPSS annual college dinner, made in 2009 for the College of Architecture and Planning Student’s Society, whose secretary asked the studio for what the post calls a simple but “straight to the point event poster”.

The brief came from the society’s secretary and asked for something unfussy: “a simple but straight to the point event poster”, in the post’s own words. The studio delivered the poster and the ticket that goes with it, and labelled the post graphic design, posters and tickets accordingly.

Both pieces print the society’s name as CAPSS, and so does the post’s title, while the post’s own sentence expands it as the College of Architecture and Planning Student’s Society (CAPPS). The listing follows the printed mark and the title, and keeps the society’s full name with both spellings visible rather than choosing between them.

The poster carries the whole brief on its face. It is an annual college dinner and the launching of the Simpoa Fund, on 28.03.09 at 7:00 PM at Noda Hotel in Fumesua, with the vice chancellor, provost, registrar, deans and heads of department listed as invited guests and entry at GHC 10; two contact names and the studio’s own blog address and telephone number run along the foot. Because the artwork prints its own date, the project is dated by what it advertises rather than by the post alone — the announcement went up on 7 March, three weeks before the dinner.

The ticket repeats the system in landscape and disagrees with the poster on one line: where the poster’s strapline announces the launching of the Simpoa Fund, the ticket’s reads “annual college dinner & awards night”. Both are reproduced here exactly as printed, since neither is corrected anywhere in the studio’s own record.

As a design it is one idea carried through two formats: an olive damask wallpaper cut by tilted white bands, the society’s name in a tall outlined display face, and a place setting — fork, knife and folded green napkins — used full-bleed on the ticket and along the foot of the poster. It sits with the studio’s other 2009 graphic design work in the archive, and unlike most of that year’s entries it names its client, its venue and its price.
